Table of Content

Pick accounting software for a Delaware company with owners abroad the way you would for any small business and you will end up with tidy books and an unfiled Form 5472. That form, and the currencies your Wise or Payoneer account actually receives, are what separate a foreign-owned company from a domestic one. This guide compares QuickBooks Online, Xero, Zoho Books, Wave, Inkle, Firstbase and Pilot on exactly those two points, then matches a setup to a single-member LLC, a C-corp with foreign shareholders, and a multi-member LLC.

Why a foreign-owned company needs more than bookkeeping software

A Delaware LLC or C-corp with owners outside the United States carries one federal filing that domestic small businesses never see.

A foreign-owned single-member LLC is a disregarded entity for income tax, but it must still file Form 5472 attached to a pro forma Form 1120 every year, reporting transactions with its foreign owner: money put in, money taken out, loans, and payments for services.

A US corporation that is at least 25% foreign-owned files Form 5472 with its own Form 1120, one for each foreign related party it dealt with.

The penalty for a missing or substantially incomplete form is $25,000 per form, per year, and it grows by another $25,000 for each 30 days the failure continues after an IRS notice.

Standard US accounting software is built for the owner who files a Schedule C or a routine Form 1120.

It will record every contribution and distribution correctly, but recording a transaction is not reporting it.

None of the mainstream bookkeeping tools prepares Form 5472, so the software gives you clean numbers and leaves the filing, and the penalty exposure, with you. The second gap is currency.

Founders abroad usually bank with Wise or Payoneer in several currencies, and entry-level plans that only book US dollars turn every foreign-currency receipt into a manual conversion.

The tools compared

The first four are bookkeeping software you run yourself. The last three are services with people who prepare filings.

Prices are from each vendor's pricing page in September 2026 and change often, so check before you buy.

Which setup fits which company

A single-member Delaware LLC owned by one founder abroad has the simplest books and the most exposed filing.

The pairing that works is inexpensive multi-currency bookkeeping, Zoho Books Professional or QuickBooks Online Essentials, with a service or CPA that files Form 5472 and the pro forma 1120 once a year.

Keep a running record of every transfer between you and the LLC, because those are exactly the transactions the 5472 reports, and a founder who pays a personal expense from the LLC account has created one.

A Delaware C-corp with foreign founders files a real Form 1120 and pays 21% federal tax on its profits, with a Form 5472 for each foreign shareholder of 25% or more it transacted with.

Here a full-service provider that prepares the 1120 and the 5472s together, such as Pilot with its foreign-shareholder add-on or Inkle, removes the handoff between bookkeeper and tax preparer where most errors happen.

A multi-member LLC is taxed as a partnership instead, files Form 1065, and can owe withholding on foreign partners' shares of certain income, which is a job for a CPA rather than a software checkbox.

What to check before you pick a tool

Start with onboarding. The software is sold to the US company, but a founder abroad will be the one signing up, verifying identity, and connecting bank feeds.

Wave, for example, serves businesses located in the United States or Canada, and some add-ons across vendors ask for US identity details.

Confirm that the tool connects to the accounts you actually use, whether Mercury, Wise, Relay or Payoneer, before paying for a year.

Then check the three things that matter at filing time. The tool should book transactions in the currencies you receive and convert them at a recorded rate.

It should let you tag owner contributions, distributions and loans separately, so the Form 5472 figures come straight out of a report. And it should export cleanly for whoever prepares the return.

Price differences between the bookkeeping tools are small next to the $25,000 penalty, so choose on those three points first.

Where Form 5472 filing fits in the year

Form 5472 with the pro forma Form 1120 is due April 15 for a calendar-year company, extendable to October 15 with Form 7004.

A foreign-owned disregarded LLC files it by fax or mail rather than e-file, and it is owed even in a year with no revenue, because the formation contribution itself is a reportable transaction.

Close the books for the year first, reconcile every transfer with the owner, and hand the preparer a report of those transactions rather than raw bank statements.

If you want the filing handled on its own, a CPA or a filing-only service can prepare Form 5472 and the pro forma 1120 from your closed books.

Whichever route you choose, the rule stays the same: bookkeeping software keeps the numbers, and a person or service still has to file the form.

Frequently asked questions

Does QuickBooks file Form 5472?

No. QuickBooks Online records the transactions between a foreign owner and the company, but it does not prepare or file Form 5472 or the pro forma Form 1120. The same is true of Xero, Zoho Books and Wave. A CPA or a tax service has to prepare the form from your books, and a missing form carries a $25,000 penalty per form, per year.

Which accounting software supports multi-currency for a Delaware LLC?

QuickBooks Online supports multi-currency from its Essentials plan, Xero only on its Established plan, Zoho Books from its Professional plan, and Wave handles foreign-currency invoices and bills. The cheapest plans of QuickBooks, Xero and Zoho book in US dollars only, which turns every Wise or Payoneer receipt in another currency into a manual conversion.

Who files Form 5472 for a foreign-owned Delaware LLC?

The LLC does, through whoever prepares its return: a CPA, or a tax service such as Inkle or Firstbase that lists Form 5472 for foreign-owned companies. It is filed with a pro forma Form 1120 by April 15, extendable to October 15 with Form 7004, and a foreign-owned disregarded LLC files it by fax or mail rather than e-file.

Does a Delaware C-corp with foreign shareholders file Form 5472?

Yes, if a foreign person owns at least 25% of the corporation and the corporation had reportable transactions with that shareholder or another foreign related party. The corporation attaches one Form 5472 per foreign related party to its own Form 1120. Pilot, for example, adds this to its C-corp tax service at $500 per foreign shareholder.
